GOKUDOLLS – New Dark & Bizarre Anime Parody from Netflix

Happy new Year everyone – and apologies for the quiet last few weeks: Alex and I have been super ill and with the Xmas holidays it all clashed together. In any case, today I come to talk briefly about an anime Netflix has going on at the moment and that caught me 100% by surprise. I think a fair few of them would be right onto this. It is called GOKUDOLLS (or Back Street Girls as it is known in the English-speaking world), and it is one of the most bizarre things I’ve seen in a long time!!

What Was the Fuss with Venom and What Happened with Daredevil?

I literally just went to see Venom this weekend gone. And, I tell ya, I came out of the movie thinking: ” Why were people so bloody annoying and judgy?!”. I will be honest, I didn’t have the greatest expectations because I am never 100% on board with the adaptations of Marvel stuff to movies (just my personal opinion!). The Spiderman universe, however, has always been one of my favourites, and I have religiously followed it – therefore Venom wasn’t gonna be left out. I have always had a dear love for symbiotes (in fact, writing a paper related about this! Keep your eyes peeled if you’re interested), and thought that the CGI looked good from the trailers. Plus Tom Hardy…when has be not been excellent? So off I go to see Venom… Continue reading “What Was the Fuss with Venom and What Happened with Daredevil?”

Oh, boy! Another Series that Ends…Badly? Lilly’s Rant on Orphan Black, Season Developments, Audience and Narrative

It is Sci-Fi TV series ranting day boys and girls! Yeah! Sure you were waiting for this! What has got you ranting today Lilly, you may be asking yourselves? Well! Glad you asked! I am rather annoyed at the investment I have done in a couple of science fiction tv series and how their endings have been terribly underwhelming, almost making me feel like they might as well just try to push for another season and actually wait for the series to decline naturally because…What was that about?

I am talking about Orphan Black, yes. 5 seasons I have been attached to a screen following these clones and their stories. Not only that: I have even involved them in an academic paper I gave at a symposium at the University of Winchester just last year (March 2016). And…what for? Well for a very jolly ending, innit? I do not usually do spoilers, as you know, but today there is gonna be some of that so, from here on, please be aware *SPOILERS APPLY*.

When did Fantasy get so Vanilla..?

When did fantasy get so “vanilla”?! I mean, seriously, when did this happen?

I remember being a child and experiencing epic stories, being exposed to Warhammer, Tolkien mythos, Dragon Lance and other classics. Movies such as Dark Crystal would form my teens. We got Buffy! Even Charmed (if you ignore the later seasons). And now…What do we have now?!

Of course, Game of Thrones is killing it on TV (…literally…) and the Song of Ice and Fire series are bestseller books. Even the Harry Potter universe has changed from Dementors and evil wizards to this insipid play published just a few months back (in my opinion any way – and I am no Potterhead but many of my friends agree it is really not what they expected or wanted…and the upcoming movie, which, although looks really pretty…Is it going to be an epic fantasy story? Well, I reserve my judgement until I see it). Yet you go to any bookshop, and for some reason the fantasy section will always be bigger than the sci-fi and other geek lines of interest. Hell, I’ll rather buy Waterstones entire selection of fantasy books than their comics section. It seems strange that having such a powerful flourishing field with fantasy created in all shapes and forms on paperbacks, yet the rest of the media seem to have gone incredibly quiet…

Stranger Things – Because You Should

Once again, Netflix has proven that the reason why they are owning the TV industry of ou day an age is because they are able to produce high quality shows that engage with people in a very deep level. The latest hit is the fan favourite, viral hit Stranger Things. You haven’t seen it? You re in this blog, therefore you ought to watch it. It will not let you down. Why? Because Stranger Things is a show for geeks – amongst others who may just suffer from 80s nostalgia.

I did not have Netflix until recently, so I heard about it from my friends collective who really encouraged me to get on to it because: “it is totally your thing”. Well, they were right. But first, let me tell you about some of the ways the show had been described to me, and maybe then you will get why this is cool. “Stranger things is like playing very trippy DnD with your friends, but stuff actually gets real, like , for good, and super quick”. “Just imagine DnD meets Silent Hill, in the 80s”. “I mean, it is Winona Rider”. “Just so many references to absolutely everything, ever”….I am sure you get the picture, right? Well then, in the very best ManaBurnt style, I’ll give you my piece as to why this is a great show and why i liked it -and don’t worry: no spoilers, just in case.

First of all, let me tell you that the acting is SUPERB. There is not a single character in the entire series that is not well delineated and well established from their first appearance. Winona is particularly amazing, and more importantly, credible. The children are seriously relatable: if you play RPGs, you know straight out each of them play their role in the party to the core. Moreover, they actually struggle with real problems everyone can relate to: being bully at school, being misunderstood, ignored, or underestimated…and of course, lets not forget the deep connotations the show throws at you about depriving children from their childhood, child abuse…Violence –  and not just guns or weapons, but the brutal reality of events that can just creep in at any moment of your life, suffering…All these things are very real and well transmitted by the entire cast. Period.

“My name is Lucifer Morningstar”

So, everyone that knows me knows that I like being up to date on what interesting stuff is showing on TV. Back at home I used to watch series at night with my parents and its a tradition that recreates that homely feeling.

Well, some of you may know that only last week (25/01/2016 to be precise) the first episode of Lucifer aired. And oh boy was I dying to watch it. When I first heard they were doing this little project, I was expecting something dark – super dark. After all its based on a comic book series produced by Vertigo! For those of you who may not be entirely familiar with the subject: Lucifer is a spin-off series created to follow a recurrent character from Neil Gaiman’s almighty The Sandman. Then they got him his own solo project under the direction of Mike Carey. And know he gets his own TV series – something that I am afraid Sandman fans have been wanting for years, and for the foreseeable future presents to be complicated – and why? Because Lucifer is a cool guy. Evil. But cool. Continue reading ““My name is Lucifer Morningstar””
